Definition

This is the operation executed by the ship´s personnel or by the palleters, so that cargo is tied and secured according to navigational techniques. Also called securing.Lashing is a sub-process of TerminalOperations by which a subject (usually the terminal’s personnel) or carrier (ship’s personnel) performs the operation to secure/unsecure cargo on the carrier, that belongs to a CarrierVisit process.

Further Detail

O

lashing Lashing is consider considered “active” if the resources are in place ready to perform the activity (loading, unloading or moving lashing or unlashing the cargo) . The “start” will define the first time the process is active and the end the last time. During the terminal operations the process could be inactive because the resources are not in place (ie suspension of operations because high wind).
Lashing may be carried out in parallel to the CargoOperations sub-process.

carriervisit.terminaloperations.lashing is a subprocess of TerminalOperations process:

  • carriervisit.terminaloperations.preparationatarrival  “start”lashing “start” event is when the terminal or carrier has first allocated lashing personnel (lashing gang) onto the carrier or has performed the first lashing/unlashing operation.

  • carriervisit.terminaloperations.preparationatarrival  “end”lashing “end” event is when the terminal isor carrier has completed all lashing/unlashing operations.

Preparation at arrival and closing at departure: Preparation and closing are necessary to execute the terminal operation, therefore they are included within terminal operations. Preparation and closing could be active before/after as they are preparatory/finalizing works. It is a preparatory/finalizing work before/after the terminal operations process start/ends and can be considered “active”. So preparation will always “start” before the terminal operations “start” and the closing will always “end” after terminal operations “end” because are activities that needs to be done before and after the terminal operations.

Considerations per Carrier type:

Lashing and CargoOperations: Lashing may be performed in parallel to CargoOperations by securing single parcels of cargo before completion of the overall cargo operation.
Lashing could start before CargoOperations to unsecure cargo parcels for unloading from a carrier. CargoOperations may then start before the overall lashing (unsecuring) operation is completed.

Vessel:

  • carriervisit.terminaloperations.lashing.start is when the lashing gang (terminal’s or ship’s personnel) performs the first lashing operation on the vessel.

  • carriervisit.terminaloperations.lashing.end is when the last remaining cargo parcel (e.g. a container) is secured/unsecured.

Truck:

  • carriervisit.terminaloperations.lashing.start is when the carrier (truck driver or terminal personnel) is securing/unsecuring the first twistlocks or any other lashing equipment (chains, straps, locking pins)

  • carriervisit.terminaloperations.lashing.end is when the carrier (truck driver or terminal personnel) completes the securing/unsecuring of the last twistlock or any other lashing equipment.

Rail:

  • carriervisit.terminaloperations.lashing.start is when the relevant personnel first arranges the pins (twistlocks) or any other lashing equipment on the train wagons.

  • carriervisit.terminaloperations.lashing.end is when the relevant personnel completes securing/unsecuring the last pins (twistlocks) or any other lashing equipment on the last train wagon.
