Definition

M

A quay (pronounced key or kay) is a solid, linear, man-made platform built along the shore where carriers can be positioned for loading or unloading cargo or passengers, for refueling and/or repairs safely.

Further Detail

O

The quay connects directly to the terminal yard and serves as a critical transfer point where containers enter or leave the terminal system.

It may span hundreds or thousands of meters, supporting multiple berths (Berth ) along its length.

It contains:

  • numbered bollards along the entire length to secure the vessel;

  • fenders to protect both the vessel and the dock structure during https://tic40.atlassian.net/wiki/x/PQOhOw ;

  • may contain embedded parallel crane rails running the length of the quay that guide the movement of STS cranes along the vessel;

  • can accommodate integrated services such as electrical connections, water lines, drainage systems, and communication networks.

Numbers on bollards are often used as a reference to logically subdivide sections of the dock [ https://tic40.atlassian.net/wiki/pages/resumedraft.action?draftId=1780023297 https://tic40.atlassian.net/wiki/x/AYCMb https://tic40.atlassian.net/wiki/x/DQBJJ ] .

Alternatively, quays can be divided into “minimum operating areas” defined as the “minimum area where an STS crane or other mobile equipment can safely operate on a ship”.
