CODECO to TIC4.0
INTRODUCTION
A message by which a terminal, depot, etc. confirms that the containers specified have been delivered or picked up by the inland carrier (road, rail or barge). This message can also be used to report internal terminal container movements (excluding loading and discharging the vessel). This message is part of a total set of container-related messages. These messages serve to facilitate the intermodal handling of containers by streamlining the information exchange The business scenario for the container messages is clarified in a separate document, called “Guide to the scenario of EDIFACT container messages”.
The CODECO message is intended for the reporting of gate activity (gate movements) associated with an item of equipment in and out of a container terminal, storage and repair facility, or packing/unpacking facility. It can also be used to report movements within the facility, including changes to the status of the item of equipment after servicing or repair. The container leasing industry will also use it for notification of changes to the lease status of a container - ie. as a report of on/off hire or direct interchange.
As a base for the translation, we used the SMDG standard document for CODECO213. See SMDG-CODECO213
The following segment groups are defined in this standard:
Segment Groups
The segment groups will be mentioned here in the order they are used in the CODECO specification. Some of the segments are split. Other segments are integrated into it.
We follow here the order in the CODECO specification and list short descriptions of the content. The details can be found in the subpages.
UNH Message Header: BGM Beginning of Message
UNH is a service segment starting and uniquely identifying a message and contains information about the kind of message, version, creation date and structural information.
It contains an UNH and a DTM Segment.
CODECO UNH Message Header - BGM Beginning of Message
Segment Group 1: RFF - Reference
RFF expresses a reference which applies to the entire message, such as: - reference to the previous message.
CODECO Segment Group 1: RFF - Refererence
Segment Group 2: TDT - RFF
A segment to indicate transport details related to the main carriage stage of the
transport (sea), such as carrier/liner service.
CODECO Segment Group 2: TDT + RFF - Details of Transport and Reference
Segment Group 3: LOC +DTM
A segment to specify a location related to the means of transport such as places
and ports of arrival and departure. Date and time are related to the location
CODECO Segment Group 3: LOC+DTM
Segment Group 4: NAD
A segment to identify the party's name and address which is applicable to the whole message
Segment Group 5: CTA - COM
A segment to identify a person or department of a message sender and/or
message recipient, such as: - information contact
CODECO Segment Group 5: CTA - COM
Segment Group 10: EQD-RFF-TMD-DTM-LOC-
MEA-DIM-SEL-FTX-EQA-HAN
Segment Group 10 is a segment identifying a container, container size/type and includes other significant information related to the container.
Tag | Short Description |
|---|---|
EQD | A segment identifying a container, container size/type. The equipment status may be e.g. overlanded, shortlanded, imported, exported. |
RFF | A segment identifying a reference number which relates to the equipment specified in the preceding EQD segment, such as:
|
TMD | Transport Movement Details indicate a Full Container Load (FCL) or a Less than Full Container Load (LCL). |
DTM | A segment to identify a date and time related to the equipment, such as:
|
LOC | A segment to identify a location or country related to the equipment, such as:
|
MEA | Measurements segment specifying a physical measurement related to the equipment, such as:
|
DIM | Dimensions - A segment specifying physical dimensions related to the equipment, such as:
|
SEL | Seal Number - A segment identifying a seal number related to the equipment. |
FTX | Free Text - A segment to specify supplementary information related to the equipment, such

CODECO Segment Group 10: EQD-RFF-TMD-DTM-LOC- MEA-DIM-SEL-FTX-EQA-HAN
Segment Group 11: DAM-COD
A segment to specify equipment damages, such as the point of the damage on
the equipment, and the type of damage.
CODECO Segment Group 11: DAM - COD
Segment Group 12: TDT-DTM
Segment Group 6 is a segment identifying a container, container size/type and includes other significant information related to the container.
The segment groups hold different Tags to identify the information and is “interrupted” by other segment groups to give more information about the status of the container or the content.
CODECO Segment Group 12: TDT- DTM
Segment Group 13: LOC
The LOC segment in this place is used to specify ports/locations associated with inland transport of a container, such as: - place of departure - place of arrival
Segment Group 10: NAD
A segment to specify the actual address where a piece of equipment is to be
delivered finally (final place of positioning).
CODECO Segment Group 10: NAD - Name and Address
Segment Group 14: DGS-FTX
A segment to identify the UN-number and the class of the dangerous goods
loaded in the container.
CODECO Segment Group 14: DGS - FTX
Segment Group 16: TMP+RNG
A segment to specify the type of transport related temperature such as storage,
transport or operating temperature and also to optionally specify a single value
temperature setting.
CODECO Segment Group 16: TMP-RNG
UNT Message Trailer
UNT is the message trailer and service segment ending a message, giving the total number of segments in the message (including the UNH & UNT) and the control reference number of the message.
